The charge of burglary, especially when the accused person is accused of entering an occupied residence or is armed, is a very serious crime. A person's home is considered sacrosanct, and any person who is arrested for entering another person's residence to commit a crime faces the potential of a lengthy prison sentence.
At the Zolman Law Firm, our lawyers defend people who are charged with all kinds of criminal charges, including burglary and trespassing. We offer a free initial consultation to discuss your case and your options. We have offices in Mid County and South County in St. Louis.
What Is Burglary?
Burglary is the breaking and entering of a home or building with the purpose of committing a crime such as theft or assault. Burglary is a felony if:
- The home was occupied
- You used a weapon
- You assaulted someone
- You stole more than $500 in property
Trespassing is often a lesser included offense of burglary.
Given the seriousness of a burglary charge, you should not talk to police before you talk to an attorney. It may be possible to persuade police to charge you with a lesser offense, or to suspend imposition of your sentence in exchange for probation. If you successfully complete probation, you would not have a conviction on your record.
Our goal in any criminal case is to keep you from getting a criminal record if that is possible — or at least to keep you from being charged with a felony.
